About TU Dance
Founded in 2004 by Toni Pierce-Sands and Uri Sands, TU Dance has quickly become a Twin Cities favorite, featuring Uri’s signature choreography which reaches across modern, ballet, and traditional dance forms. Since the company’s sold-out opening run, the company has quickly expanded from its annual summer project at the Southern Theater to full seasons of work in the Twin Cities and a growing tour program. Along the way, TU Dance has received significant critical acclaim, including “Artists of the Year” by the StarTribune and “Best Performance” by the inaugural Sage Awards. The company also won the confidence of the McKnight Foundation, who has awarded a two-year grant to support its first full seasons.
Artistic Directors and also life partners, Toni and Uri continue to draw energy and inspiration from intersecting professional careers, having met and danced together at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Known for her soloist performances in Ailey signature pieces such as Revelations and Cry, Toni’s career also includes seasons with progressive European companies like Tanz Forum in Germany and Company Rick Odums in Paris. Uri, meanwhile, developed a considerable reputation as both dancer and choreographer with companies like Complexions and North Carolina Dance Theatre. His recent commissions include collaborations with VocalEssence, Penumbra Theatre and New York’s Complexions Contemporary Ballet, as well as new work for North Carolina Dance Theater and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Along with the many honors for TU Dance, Toni and Uri were each awarded McKnight Artist Fellowships in 2004-05, for dance and choreography, respectively.
