wondering

Holidays are over. New Year on the way. Christmas show closed. Tearing down the set and putting away costumes, wigs and props. Vacuuming up the glitter, lost eyelashes, bobby pins and assorted odd metal things that clog up the vacuum. What a world! Makes me wonder……
Why do artists throw themselves so completely into what they do and then we throw it all out into the dumpster, saving only the memories?
Why do we create works of art (if I may be so bold) and then bittersweetly take a hammer and smash it all down until it fits into a metal container that a stranger comes with a truck and takes it all away (not even knowing what it is) to somewhere unknown?
What happens to all the energy that has circled around the theatre night after night between artists and audience, music and lights, laughter and tears? No wonder I keep seeing ghosts around here…must be artists, from another time, hanging out in familiar territory. Seriously, I see them often!
What happens to these posts? Does anyone read them? I guess it doesn’t matter because I enjoy writing them and wondering!
All this “wonder”…must be the beginning of a new year!
My next project is “Goldilocks and Little Red Riding Hood” that we have planned for young audiences. One of my dogs “Blue” LOVES the Cartoon Network so I have spent extra time watching with him just to get an idea of what young people are watching. WOW! Not what I watched when I was a kid. Do kids even know the stories of Goldilocks and Little Red? They must, eh? It has gotten me very excited about doing a new ballet for them. I love to deconstruct stories and try to put a new perspective on them, and this will be fun. Like all good fairy tales, the message is timeless; Don’t break into other peoples houses and make yourself at home, and, don’t talk to strangers on your way to Grandma’s house. I am wondering what I am going to do with that! More to come…
