Katha Dance Theatre presents: Chandalika-The Untouchable Maiden
A double bill based on Tagore’s multifaceted creativity. A Timeless Mind – is a poignant collaboration with choreographer, dancer Rita Mustaphi and director Dipankar Mukherjee.
Katha Dance Theatre presents Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s celebrated dance-drama Chandalika – The Untouchable Maiden this spring. Chandalika is an examination of the marginalized women, untouchables, idealists and dreamers found in any society centuries ago and still today. It is a story of discrimination, a story of intense spiritual conflicts, a story of self-confidence and self-respect, a story of marginalization, a story of love and salvation, and a story of selfishness and self-realization.
Chandalika – the Untouchable Maiden is choreographed, directed and danced by internationally reputed Kathak dance artist Rita Mustaphi. The dance drama uses a dozen dancers, North Indian Kathak dance, folk dance, yoga, North Indian classical music and East Indian Bengali music from the original musical score composed by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The 150th anniversary of his birth is May 7th during the run of Chandalika.
