A softball backstop that is a monumental work of public art that also builds community in Northeast Minneapolis? A solar powered light that recognizes the invention of softball in the fire stations of the east side of Minneapolis? A neglected park that is now reborn as the center of its community? These are the stories addressed by a new documentary by a Northeast Minneapolis resident.
The documentary, A Backstop Named Innovation, will be screened at the Ritz Theater on Tuesday, January 17th, at 7PM. The documentary by Northeast resident John Akre captures the transformation of Jackson Square Park from an under-utilized public space into a cornerstone of the community–with sculptures, a softball field used by students at Edison High School and a fire fighters memorial.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring some of the movers and shakers behind the project. For more information, visit mtn.org.
